Preparing for your new friends & answering common questions
Before you welcome a Cosmic Waters rat into your home, here are some crucial insights and important things new rat parents should know. Understanding these points will help ensure a smooth transition and a happy, healthy life for your new companions.
Rats need companionship.
Rats must live with at least one same-sex companion to stay happy and emotionally healthy. They thrive in pairs or small groups.
They require daily time and interaction.
Rats are intelligent, social animals that thrive with regular handling, enrichment, and bonding. Expect to spend quality time with them daily.
Proper housing and diet matter.
A spacious cage, safe bedding, enrichment, and a balanced, high-quality diet are essential for their long-term health and well-being.
Veterinary care should be planned in advance.
Rats require exotic-experienced vets, and medical care should be financially prepared for before adoption. We can provide recommendations.
Patience builds trust.
Every rat adjusts at their own pace. Gentle handling and consistency create confident, loving companions that will bond deeply with you.
Lifetime responsibility is expected.
Rats are a commitment for their entire lifespan (typically 2-3 years). If circumstances ever change, Cosmic Waters Rattery is always here to help.
Do rats bite?
Well-socialized rats are gentle and rarely bite. Biting usually comes from fear, improper handling, or pain, not aggression. Our rats are handled daily to ensure they are confident and friendly.
Do rats smell?
Rats are very clean animals that groom themselves diligently. With proper housing (appropriately sized cage, safe bedding) and regular cleaning, odor is minimal. Any strong odor usually indicates insufficient cage cleaning.
Will I bond with my rat?
Absolutely! Rats are incredibly intelligent, affectionate, and form strong, unique bonds with their humans. Many first-time owners are surprised by how loving and interactive rats can be, often seeking out human companionship and cuddles.
Find your cosmic companion
The ideal home for a Cosmic Waters rat values patience, responsibility, and genuine connection. We look for individuals or families who understand rats are social companions, not just cage-only pets. The perfect rat parent is willing to learn, provide proper care, has time for daily interaction and enrichment, and is prepared for veterinary needs. This is a commitment for life, and we are here to support you every step of the way. Families with children can be wonderful homes when adults take primary responsibility and interactions are calm and supervised.
